Florence

We spent the next leg of our Spring Break in Florence; an honest to go beautiful city! We got there at night and stumbled around trying to find our hostel, Emerald Fields. Let me just say, if ever you decide to go to Florence and are on tight budget much like myself, I highly recommend you staying there. At first we were a little perturbed by the look of it...it happens to be a literal hole in the wall...but I learned from my momma never to judge a book by its cover. We opened the creaky wooden door to find a cute little space; narrow hallways, bright colored walls and a hottie patottie front desk man. Jackpot. Brooke, Abi and I got our key from the cutie at the front desk and made out way up to our room to find two other beds inhabited by randos. Gotta love randos. And obviously I was opted into sleeping next to the two randos. Luckily they turned out to be two cool dudes from Japan, one named June and the other I could not remember for the life of me...even at the time. Because of mine and Brooke's obsession with the movie, I happened to call June Juno a few times. Mostly not on purpose...

So after putting our things away and getting settled, we ventured out for our first dinner in Florence. It was a bit of a failure. We went to a restaurant in a touristy area and totally got ripped off by the a-hole of a manager. I only say a-hole because I know my grandma reads this (hi grammie!) After dinner, we went out to a bar called Red Garter for Brooke's big 2-1 celebration. I had a great time but then again, you know me. Give me some sweet tunes, a semblance of a dance floor and good people and I'm set. On our way back home we got our second glimpse of the Duomo, which is a huge and famous church in the center of the city. I don't know what it is about the Duomo but it is ten times more breath taking at night than at any point during the day. Something about the way it glows, the colors, the size...I'm not really sure but it is definitely something to see. So we walked and gawked and finally made our way back to the hostel where I had the best sleep of my life. And no, I'm not kidding; the beds were fantastic.

The next day we woke up bright and early to start our day of touring. Even though it was raining (bum city) we were ready to take on the day. We started by going to a market near our hostel. There were tons of vendors selling scarves, leather jackets, random trinkets and things of the like. Feeling somewhat defeated by the rain we made our way to a cafe for an early lunch. The good thing about the group I was with...we are all always down for an early lunch :-) Then we all decided to go to see the David statue. Our group accidentally split up and by the time we reached the museum, the other half of our group had already gone in. When we went to the ticket office we realized that there was no student discount...BOOM. It sounds really lame but I live for student discounts; we all stopped in our tracks and looked at each other. Was seeing the David really worth it...there are replicas all over the city. We decided to mull it over during a group bathroom break. On my way to the bathroom I passed these huge doors and through the crack of the doors...lo and behold...THE DAVID! FO FREE! I quickly ran downstairs and told the others to a) be stealth and b) if they peaked through the crack they could see the David clear as day. Much to the dismay of the lady security guard, we all got a peak and called it a day.
No student discounts my ass.

That night we went to dinner with some of my friends from school at an excellet place called Il Gato. I got a really yummy pasta dish, some good wine and was able to catch up with old friends, which is always a plus. From there Brooke, Abi and I made our way to Red Garter to meet up with some friends from our program and to celebrate Brooke's birthday some more! The bar was completely empty (because Sunday is God's day) but we all still managed to have a great time. Abi and I serenaded Brooke for her birthday with an oldy but a goodie, "Man in the Mirror" by the great Michael Jackson and then busted out "Africa" by Shakira. I learned very quickly that I don't actually know the words to that song because it is indeed in some African language.

Our last full day in Florence was spend doing some more exploring and luckily it was a beautiful day. We began our day by going to the river and saw one of the most beautiful views ever. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and we could see sprawling hills with tons of old and gorgeous houses situated on them. We also went to Michaelangelo's house, which admittedly I thought was going to be boring. It wasn't. My trip to Italy has given me a newfound appreciation or Michaelangelo and everything he accomplished. His house had been renovated by members of his family but the ambiance was still there along with the original paintings, furniture and overall decor. After that we went on the search for some gelato. I went to an amazing place called Grom, which is apparently the best gelato in Florence. The flavor that everyone says cannot be missed is Creme de Grom so naturally I had to try it; it didn't disappoint. Then half of us headed back for nap time before dinner; we went to a restaurant called Anita's for dinner which was in Santa Croce. It was one of our best meals in Florence by far and I couldn't have enjoyed the company I was with any more; we ate, drank, chatted and laughed. After dinner we were all a little giddy and decided to walk (more like galavant) around Santa Croce and had a little group photo shoot and sing a long session. One of my friends happens to know the entire Nicki Minaj verse to Monster, which is beyond impressive and we made her rap it all the way home. It was a perfect way to end our time in Florence. NEXT DAY: ROMA!

Spring Break...better late then never

Well, it's been a bit since I've blogged soo let's see how this pans out. Spring Break was a couple weeks ago but it already feels like a lifetime. Things is London move so fast; I don't know where the time is going! Before I know it I'll be on a plane headed back to the States...but we don't talk about that. Let's talk about Rome...and Florence...and Venice :-)

We began our Spring Break extravaganza in Venice. We arrived on Friday night, just in time to celebrate the first day of Carnivale. Upon arriving at the airport, we hopped a ferry (yes, a ferry) to the part of the island where our hotel was. And yes, I said hotel. Me being me, I fell asleep for an hour on the ferry; I happen to be an expert napper. When I woke up, all I could see were beautiful houses on the water...just rows of colors and boats and gondolas...exactly what I pictured Florence to be. Soon enough we disembarked the ferry and made our way to the hotel. Now I, being a poor student traveler, usually spend my time in hostel beds, using lockers and wearing shower shoes. Not here. We stayed at Hotel Nuovo Teson and it was amazing! Brooke, Abi and I felt like Queens for a night. A warm room all to ourselves and hotel beds...mmm...the life. Not to mention, this hotel is situated right by all the action; you can literally walk to the main square, tons of restaurants and most importantly, gelato is a moment away. After exploring the Venice at night with friends, we made our way back to the hotel and I slept like a rock.

The next morning we were ready to "greet the day" (love ya, niks!) and celebrate Carnivale. After an amazing (and FREE) breakfast, we met our friends and started out to see the sights. Lucky for us, it was a beautiful day in Venice. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and the crowd was CRAZY. We saw all that Venice had to offer; climbing bridges, looking out onto the beautiful water, sipping some Bellini and walking into shops. Everyone bought some masks to get into the Carnivale spirit but I got my face painted :-) Such fun. As the sun set on the day, me and a few friends sat by the water and people watched. We made friends with an old and a bit nutty Italian couple who loved saying American movie stars' names. And the former US Presidents' names. I think it was the only English they knew, but it was fun none the less. The end of the day came around and even though our feet were sore from walking, we were all reluctant to leave beautiful Venice. I can't complain though...we were headed to Florence the next day. So we went back to the hotel, retrieved our belongings and got on the ferry once again, which would take us to the train station.

The train ride to Florence was a blast. Abi, Brooke and I had some snacks, listened to some tunes and made friends with a group of students in the group of chairs next to us. They told us all about how amazing Florence is along with great places to eat, go out and sight see. Between all the food, introductions, talk and laughter, the train ride flew by. We were in Florence; ready to start a new adventure.

After seeing and spending time in Venice I became confident that world traveling is life for me. Of course, I'm going to have to put off conquering the world until I complete my schooling. And get more money. And purchase a cool traveling back pack.  Never the less,  I decided spring break was going to be all about seeing new places, meeting new people and doing anything and everything that I had never done before. So far so good.

More funny things that happen in the wee hours of the morning...

SPOTTED: a real life milk man. delivering milk in little glass bottles door to door of the Noopsies that live in Sloane Square (2 points if you get the reference)...

not only did this milk man have a cute little white milk truck. but the truck actually "moo-ed" as he drove from door to door. i kid you not, it happened. twice.

i really hope i get to see that again, hopefully at 3 a.m. Otherwise, I fear it might not be as funny.

The time is now 4 a.m...

At this hour in London...

1) Vendors are selling every kind of hot dog possible
2) Birds are chirping loudly in the tree tops
3) There is bumper to bumper traffic EVERYWHERE you go

though i enjoy discovering all the little details about the city i love so dearly...right now...all i can think about is pajamas.

Best Week(end) Ever...

This evening, I woke up from the best 4 hour nap I have ever taken. That in itself is a bold statement considering that I am the Queen of Naps. But this nap trumped them all. I finally hit my pillow after being up for 30 consecutive hours; my springy, creaky, puny bed felt exactly like one of those puffy, perfect clouds you see when you look out the window of an airplane. What was I doing in these 30 hours you might ask? Well, living it up in Madrid of course.

At 7:30 a.m. this past Friday, I boarded the plane to Madrid to begin one of the best weekends of my life. Thank you EasyJet. We arrived at Cats Hostel, which was AMAZING by the way, at around 11 a.m. and began roaming the city. Abi, Brooke and I wandered through the streets of Madrid, stopping at beautiful plazas and churches and admiring the beautiful people of Spain. With no direction and no plan, we decided to spend our first day enjoying the sun and hustle and bustle of the Plaza Mayor. Gelato in hand, we sat basking in the rays and watching all the street performers and people go about their day. It was amazing and a great change of pace for all of us. Then we reluctantly made our way back to the hostel, took a 3 hour power nap and decided to kill some time and a couple pitchers of Sangria while we waiting for the rest of our group to get in.

Dressed and ready to go at around 7 p.m., we found our way to a restaurant called La Tia Cebolla (accento sobre la "i") and decided this is where we were going to satisfy our sangria fix. All I can say is...buena idea. The waiters were friendly, the sangria was tasty and the bar snacks kept on coming. By 9:30 we were feeling good and ready to meet up with the guys and take on the evening. And so we did. It was a full night of laughing, dancing, drinking and soaking up the perfection that is Spain. And so at 4 a.m., when I couldn't bare my heels anymore, we made our way home for a few hours of shut eye.

The next morning, after my complimentary croissant and orange juice, I got ready to greet the day in Spain. All 9 of us set out to see the sights of Madrid. We made our way to La Reina Sofia, the Prado and   the Royal Palace but these places were nowhere near my favorites. For me, it was sauntering through the gorgeous parks, eating peanuts and laughing. It was sitting in the Plaza Mayor with frozen yogurt, taking pictures of a sad excuse for a Spiderman and talking about how lucky we felt being in Spain. It was sneaking back into our hostel to snag a spot on a couch and relax after Brooke, Abi and I had already checked out. It was the witty banter, toasts over dinner and side streets less traveled that made the trip what it was. Perfect. The churros and chocolate at 3 a.m., between the nightclub and the flight, wasn't bad either. Though admittedly, and please do not judge, I might have preferred the Dominos around the corner.

And so, at 4:30 a.m., we cabbed it to the airport. I had another croissant and slept in the terminal while we waited for our plane to arrive. Even though my feet hurt (I'm still having trouble walking), I looked like a hot mess and was delirious from lack of sleep, I would not change anything about the trip for the world. I'd like to leave you with my final exchange in Spain before boarding the plane.

Me: "I am going to leave Spain with as much dignity as I possibly can."
Brooke: "Alisa, you have croissant in your hair."
Me: "Right. Obviously..."

And we all erupt with laughter...which seemed to be the theme of the trip. Cheers!

Kooky Things My Professor Says...

So I've been told on many occasions by family, friends, random acquaintances and otherwise that I have a strangely expansive vocabulary. Not to toot my own horn, but I too believe this to be true. I have been known to come up with an original pet name or two and if I'm feeling extra on my game I can even incorporate phrases like "off her rocker", "toasted my noodle" and "outer Kishnev" into my everyday lingo. Because I have such an appreciation for the spoken word, I have decided to take note of everything my theatre professor says. This woman is a riot and can easily trump any word, phrase, insult, pet name etc. that I could ever think of...even on my best days.

To begin,

1. Toffee-nosed: stuck up, looks down on others
2. Had his fingers in many pies: doing too many things at one time (this one caught me off guard because I found it kinda gross)
3. "You can't buy a bun without it having a sexual connotation to it..."-- I just thought this was funny because...well if you ever heard her talk you would have too.

Instead of taking legitimate notes, I will dedicate myself to documenting each quirky thing she says. And then update you all immediately. Cheers!

This Week I...

1. Attempted to get tickets to Le Mis an hour before the show. Fail. Apparently these "student discount" tickets that everyone is talking about are a myth. But if anyone is going to finagle their way into a Broadway show...it's me.

2. Almost got my ass kicked on the Tube by two drunks. Really glad I didn't. That is all.

3. Tried a tuna sandwich with pesto...kinda weird. Kinda dug it.

4. Tried Indian food for the first time! Now this one was really exciting. Obviously me being me, I asked the man at the counter a million questions and tried a million samples of different curry--they were all realllllly good. Don't ask me what I ordered though, I have no clue. All I know is I ate about a pound of nan and a whole lotta chickpeas and curry. For my first time, I'd say I did pretty good. The place we went to was down a little road (at first I was a little nervous) but when we got there it seemed like Brick Lane's best kept secret. The restaurant was called Sweet and Spicy...so i guess it's not so secret anymore :-)

Regardless, while I was eating, I tried to channel my inner Adam Richman. I think it worked for the most part. I wouldn't say that Man won, but I definitely put up a good fight.

Couldn't tell you what this was but it was rullll good.

Commencing my feast

Mid to end of feasting. I tried man, I tried.

Brianne kicked ass.

Tonight, in the Sweet and Spicy Indian food challenge...
MAN (specifically Brianne) won.

Classes have Begun!

So I've started a few of my classes and am already loving them! Luckily for me, each of my teachers might as well have walked out of Harry Potter. One of them is exactly like Professor Trelawney and it is SUPERB. She's my theatre teacher which makes it even better.

For anyone who knows me...you will soon understand why I am sooooo excited about this class. I get to see a play every Tuesday--amazing.  The next day in class we just sit around and analyze the actors, set, costumes, lighting and so on--DOUBLE AMAZING.

My teacher is beyond knowledgeable and is super quirky. She's a tiny, older Scottish woman with an extremely expressive voice and appreciation for a good sense of humor. Not to mention--she's been on like a million pilgrimages all over while following the work of her favorite authors and playwrights. Not only is that dedication, but it's ridiculously cool.

Another one of my teachers could very well prove to be the Dumbledoor of the bunch. He is wickedly funny and sarcastic but also seems to have a genuine interest in his students. He asked my class about the type of people we are, where we came from, what we are interested and what we'd like to get out of the class.

That's about ten times more than the majority of my professors have ever asked me in my college career this far, mind you.

Weirdly enough, I kinda just like listening him to him speak. It's so proper and...well gorgeous sounding for lack of a better word. He also did a little activity that I thought was interesting--in order to illustrate the importance of newspapers to the British, he compared each of the students in class to one of the 10 newspapers he brought in just based on snap judgements.

I wrote down the descriptions of each of the newspapers. I've been thinking about which of my friends correspond to each of the papers. Mwaahahaha...more to come :-)

Cheers!

Note

a guy on my trip almost got kicked out of a bar for innocently trying to "dougie" the other night...

not only is that one of the funniest stories i have ever heard but i'm glad to know that they do not take well to the "dougie" overseas...not like i was planning on doing it myself.

The Night I Punched a Man in the Face...

Well, in true Alisa fashion, as I was just beginning to brag about knowing my way around London, I got way lost. In fairness, it was the bus system this time and NOT the tube. I am a pro at the tube...let that be known. Either way, while coming home from a club called Oxygen...which thankfully played all my favorite hits...minus Drop It Low (sad), I went with my roommate Brooke in the completely wrong direction in search for a cab.

Well, first I went in search of some pizza, but that failed as well.

After about 20 minutes of walking in the completely wrong direction, we turned around and retraced our steps only to see the bus that we needed pulling away. Shoooooot. So there we stood, waiting for our next bus to come. The lone Americans; although we were in quite the "hoppin" area so it could have been worse.

Here's where the weird part comes in.

After about 5 minutes of standing at the stop, Brooke and I were approached by 3 middle aged men in business suites. They meant no harm...in fact it was quite the opposite. One comes up to me and simply says, "I lost a bet. Will you please punch me in the face?"

Hmmmm. I have never been asked that question before. Me being me, I said yes. JUST KIDDING. Of course, I declined because I wouldn't even know how to punch someone in the face even if I tried. I told the man that...

He got on his knees and begged for me to punch him in the face. Double hmmm. I asked if a hard slap would be acceptable. I feel much more confident in the slapping area I guess. He asked his two friends...they said no. Soooo now I'm feeling really bad for this guy because he's on his knees, it's a little rainy and he's in a weird business suit looking like a complete idiot.

Therefore, I agreed to punch him. So there I am, in the middle of what I think was western, northern (oh who the hell knows) London, winding up to punch a man in the face. Okay.

So I did. He kindly thanked me. He told me that he and his friends were at a "stag lot" or something like that...which I found out was a bachelor party! Oooooh, I guess the gettups and odd requests sort of make sense now.

Either way. We spoke to them for a bit and I learned where the best theatre in London is. So for anyone who knows me, that is a night worthwhile.

About an hour and thirty minutes later, we made it home. Cheers.

London: Day One

Hi Everyone!! This is my first ever blog soooo this might be a little rough at first...

Everything's going great in the UK. Minus the weather; it's seriously gross and much like everyones' appliances, my hair is blowing up. For those of you who know me well...I'd like to say that I successfully used the tube the yesterday to meet up with my friend Abi--you all should appreciate that. It was pretty simple surprisingly so it's looking good for my habit of getting lost everywhere I go. Also, I have yet to lose or misplace my phone. I am going to get my international phone today--then I will have 2 phones to potentially lose or accidentally put in a random location. Joy.

So far so good. Everyone is so nice here and the atmosphere is great. I haven't forgotten to look to the right when crossing the street and have already tried out a few pubs. Life is good. When something interesting happens, I'll be sure to let you know but for right now I'm still me. Peace. Love. I miss American grocery stores.
